Compelled Conformity – Are LGB Voices Being Silenced in UK Workplaces?

Published in July 2025, Compelled Conformity is a research report commissioned by the LGB Alliance Business Forum and conducted by Amarta Research. Exploring the experiences of 235 lesbian, gay and bisexual employees across UK workplaces, the report examines whether equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) policies genuinely represent the people they are intended to support. Its findings highlight concerns about freedom of expression, workplace discrimination and the pressure some LGB employees feel to conform to particular views on sex, gender and sexual orientation.

Among those surveyed, 86% reported avoiding expressing their views for fear of consequences, while 65% felt pressured to publicly affirm beliefs they did not share. The report also raises concerns about exclusion from workplace networks, the quality of LGBTQ+ training and the representation of lesbian, gay and bisexual perspectives within wider inclusion initiatives. Calling for greater legal clarity, open discussion and genuinely inclusive workplace policies, Compelled Conformity offers a thought-provoking examination of equality in modern Britain. The research reflects the experiences of a self-selected group of LGB Alliance supporters rather than the wider LGB population, but raises important questions about how organisations can respect differing beliefs while protecting everyone's rights.
